Our Rescues and Recoveries II class is designed for kayakers who want to gain confidence in their ability to take care of themselves and others with an enriched toolkit of safety that goes beyond the basics. Students will be given ample time to practice and refine rescues and recoveries in an open water coastal setting in the presence of current (less than 1.5 knots), waves (less than 2 feet), potentially close to and within rocks and the conditions real life rescues happen in. By the end of the course, students will have the knowledge to handle a variety of incidents and situations on the water.

A sampling of the course content includes:

  • Scramble and ladder rescue
  • Curl rescue
  • Cleopatra’s Needle
  • Bow/stern/side-by-side rescue
  • Unresponsive paddler rescue
  • Review of contact towing with and without a tow strap/assisted swimmer rescue and re-entry techniques in condition
  • Location: Bowman Bay, Deception Pass State Park
  • Ages: 18 and up
